The Calving Book Plus has been launched in the Apple App Store! Android version coming soon! The past few weeks have been completely crazy as I have been working non-stop to get this app released and also get the update to the pro app out. Below you will find a tutorial for the plus app.
Use your real e-mail and a password you can easily remember to create an account. If you created an account with either the lite app or the pro app, you can use the same username and password. All data is transferred.
(1)Here is where all of the calves will be listed once they are created. The menu on the left under the header is where you can select which book you want to view. The menu on the right sorts the records. (2) If you click on the calf you want to view, it will take you to the details page where you can edit or delete the record. (3) This is just the view of the same page only scrolled down a bit. If you check either “Dead” or “Paired Out” it will change the color on the main screen. Red is dead, blue is paired out, and black is neither.
Adding a Calf
To add a calf, click the + button in the upper right corner the panel which houses all of the fields that are available. (If you want one that isn’t there, let me know!) It is essential that you pick what book you want it filed under so you will be able to see it later. Know that the data picker defaults to the current date but you can change it if you need to. When your network connection is non-existent, you will receive a notification saying that the calf is saved locally and will be synced when a better connection is established.
You can customize the fields by going to the “Settings” page and checking the boxes of the fields you want to see and clicking save.
The menu button is located in the upper left corner of the main screen. From this panel, you can navigate throughout the whole app.
Adding a Book
The “Books” page is where you can create an unlimited number of books. This is a useful tool especially when you want to divide records in terms of year, location, or anything else you could think of. Simply enter the name of the book and click enter or return. NOTE: YOU CAN ONLY USE LETTERS AND NUMBERS. NO SPECIAL CHARACTERS.
The “Alerts” page is pretty straight forward. The “Add Alert” button is at the bottom of the page and it will open a panel with the tools to create the alert. The picture below is the expanded view of an alert.
The ability to add breeding records is new to the line of The Calving Book apps and is only available in the plus version of the app. The great thing about the newly added breeding records is that most of the page works offline. You can create, update, and delete records without a good network connection.
The arrow in the upper right corner will open a popup that gives you the option to add a calf or edit multiple records. (1) Add calf panel: As you type a Cow ID, it searches your previous calving records for possible matches in a Cow ID. You can click on the ID and it will appear in the box. (2) The search bar searches based on Cow ID and Keyword. (3) This popup appears if you click on a record. (4) This is the update all panel. If you leave a field blank, it will not update that field. Or in other words, only the fields that have a value or a changed value will be updated. The select menu towards the bottom of the panel will determine what records are updated. Select the keyword that is tied the records you want changed. (5) Before update…(6)…after update.
The ability to add preg-checking records is also new. It works very similarly to the breeding records page. Your records are all interlinked. So while you are creating a pre-checking record, there is, again, a list of options that could possibly be what you are looking for. When you click on the Cow ID, it will automatically select a keyword for you based on what the keyword was on the selection you made. You cannot update multiple records at a time.
You can create, update, and delete records without a good network connection.
Weaning records are also among the new features of this app and again, it works similarly to the breeding records and the preg-checking records. Your records are, again, all interlinked.
The export feature as not changed. You still simply enter your e-mail in the box and click send.

How many calves can you add per book in the plus version?
There is no limit but keep in mind if you have hundreds in a book it can start to get a little slower.
I like to have all my cows divided into age groups and it won’t allow me to add a book saying 2 year olds, 3 year olds ect. Am I doing something wrong or can you not do that?
Right now, you can’t have a space.
Just downloaded the plus. One thing I would like to see is a book feature for listing the cows. I created a calf book and left the calf options blank, and that worked pretty good. Excited to start having some calves and using this app!
Something similar to this is planned!
Can you search the calf number like you search the cow number? We got around it by putting the info in cow id as “cow# – calf#”
You can search by Calf ID, Cow ID, Sire, and Color!
Sorry! I should have written “view the calf number” in the book. In settings we have calf ID toggled on and it only refers to the calf entry screen? This is great, by the way! We have it on three devices. No having to meet up and copy info into a second paper book!
Right now, it is the Cow ID that is displayed but if you go to the details page, the Calf ID is there along with the rest of the information. If you are using a phone, it is easy to see that there isn’t enough room for both. In the future, we might look into changing it.
Is there a way to connect more than one device to the same account? (Ex 2 phones so that depending who is checking the records can be updated by either person).
Yes! As long as you sign in with the same username and password on both devices, you will have access to the same records.
Is there a way to edit the name of a book?
You cannot edit a book name. If you don’t have any calves in that book, however, I can manually edit it for you if you email firstname.lastname@example.org.
What are the benefits with the plus versus pro versions? Thanks!
With both the pro and plus versions, there is a significant speed difference compared to the lite. You can divide your records into different books and export them. You can mark if a calf has died, been paired out, or culled. There is also the ability to search and look up cow history. You can add calves offline too. The plus version has all of the features of the pro but with it, you can keep track of weaning, breeding, and preg-checking records all of which work offline. In the future, more offline capabilities will be added to the plus version.
For some reason ally calving dates changed to March 30th and my attempts to edit do not work. Help please
That is a bug that will be fixed in an update that just got released in the past hour. Please update your app and the problem should be solved.
Can I have this program on a laptop as well?
Yes, the “Plus” app is available on computers.
Is there a way to edit a cow ID after it has been saved? I don’t want to delete the cow and make a new entry and lose her breeding info. Also it would be nice if there was a way to add cow color/description and info such as dob/sire/dam and attach notes to a particular cow. Am I missing something? I’m very new to the app.
Yes, if you click on a calf after it is created, you can edit the Cow ID. From here, you can pick the color of the cow and enter sires.
Is there a way to sort by tag color. We use several different tag colors and it would make pairing up simple if we could sort by color in numerical order.
We do not have a spot to sort by tag color, but we can add one!
We wondered if there is any way to look at a report of how many calves of each colour that we have entered?
If you search for the color, it will bring up all records associated with that color and give you a count!
Is there a way you can combine books from previous years into one book. We had them separated by pastures but would now like to combine them all into one year to keep the info together
Hi Zach, that is not currently possible.
Is there any way to delete/edit a book name? I want to change a name on current book or start over.
You can’t rename a book but you can delete a book by pressing and holding on it from the “Books” page.
I can’t seem to find the alerts page?? Where is it located?
Our alerts page was changed to “Notes”.
Thanks for the answer about the Notes. I am having trouble deleting live items. There’s two cows that I would like to delete but it wont remove them from the calving data. Any suggestions?
Try to log out, kill the app, then log back in.
Ya I have done that a few times. No luck. It acts like it’s deleting it but it never gets removed.
